Lizzie, one of our club’s most determined and inspiring ultra runners, represented England at the Highland Backyard Ultra last weekend covering around 214km… an extraordinary test of endurance, resilience, and mental strength!
“I had an unbelievable time representing England at the Highlander Backyard Ultra Scottish Championships, the race unfortunately needed to be stopped just after we started the 32nd yard therefore there is no result. There were 7 of us left of 157 starters. Everyone is safe and well.” Lizzie
What is the Highland Backyard Ultra?
Set against the stunning scenery of the Scottish Highlands, the Highland Backyard Ultra is part of a global race format pioneered by ultrarunning legend Laz Lake. The concept is simple, yet brutal: runners must complete a 4.167-mile (6.7 km) loop every hour on the hour. Fail to complete a lap in time, and you’re out. The race continues until there’s just one runner left standing — everyone else is marked as DNF (Did Not Finish).
The event began in 2020 and has since gained a reputation as one of the most beautiful and mentally demanding Backyard Ultras in Europe. It serves as a qualifying event for the Backyard Ultra World Championships, where national teams compete simultaneously across the globe.
How long does it go on?
There’s no time limit — the race continues until only one runner completes a solo loop. Previous editions of the Highland Backyard Ultra have lasted over 40 hours, with winners covering 170+ miles. The world record for a Backyard Ultra stands at 108 laps, or 450 miles, highlighting the astonishing endurance required at the elite level.

We’ll be tracking her progress and sharing updates as the race unfolds. Go Lizzie — we’re all cheering for you every lap of the way!
